The wild silkmoths of the island of Alor, Indonesia and description of a new species: Antheraea (A.) alorensis sp. nov. (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae)

Summary: Abstract: The following contribution to knowledge the wild silkmoths of Indonesia deals with the saturniid fauna (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) of the island of Alor, Eastern Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia. Six expeditions under extreme conditions to the island of Alor were arranged by the authors in the years 2001 till 2003. Thus far only four species of three genera of the family Saturniidae were recorded from the island of Alor, which all represented first records, cf. U. Paukstadt & L. H. Paukstadt (2002). Each two species are members of the tribus Attacini BLANCHARD, 1840: Attacus suparmani U. PAUKSTADT & L. H. PAUKSTADT, 2002 (type locality Alor Island) and Samia kikibudiamini U. PAUKSTADT, L. H. PAUKSTADT & SUHARDJONO, 2002 (type locality Alor Island), and of the tribus Saturniini BOISDUVAL, 1837 (1834): Antheraea (Antheraea) kelimutuensis U. PAUKSTADT, L. H. PAUKSTADT & SUHARDJONO, 1997 (type locality Flores Island) and Antheraea (Antheraea) alorensis sp. nov. The latter new taxon from the island of Alor is closely related to Antheraea (Antheraea) ranakaensis U. PAUKSTADT, L. H. PAUKSTADT & SUHARDJONO, 1997 (type locality Flores Island) and Antheraea (Antheraea) lorosae LANE, NAUMANN & LANE, 2004 (type locality Timor Island). A. (A.) alorensis sp. nov. is distinct to A. (A.) ranakaensis and A. (A.) lorosae mainly in the structures of the male genitalia. The new species is a member of the platessa species-group of the frithi-subgroup (sensu Nässig 1991) of the mylitta/frithi-group (sensu Paukstadt, Brosch & Paukstadt 1999) (= paphia/frithi-group (sensu Nässig 1991) [partim misinterpretation]). Taxa near Antheraea (Antheraea) platessa W. ROTHSCHILD, 1903 ranges from the southeastern Asian mainland (including northeastern India) to China, the Philippines, Borneo, the Andamans and on the Greater Sunda Islands (only two records from Sulawesi thus far) and the Lesser Sunda Islands. Due to the present geographic isolation of the island of Alor, which is located almost on the eastern tip of the Eastern Lesser Sunda Islands, the new taxon of the family Antheraea HÜBNER, 1819 (1816) is described in species rank. The larger island of Timor (Eastern Lesser Sunda Islands Province) southerly off Alor and the island of Wetar (Moluccas Province) easterly off Alor represent a saturnid fauna which is mostly distinct to those of Alor. Our studies on the Saturniidae of the island of Alor, Eastern Lesser Sunda Islands are not yet completed. Records of the genus Actias LEACH in Leach & Nodder, 1815 and of the genus Cricula WALKER, 1855 are still missing for the island of Alor. Most likely a member of the maenas-group (sensu Nässig 1994) is present on Alor as well, due to a distribution on the surrounding islands of Flores, Sumba, Timor, and Wetar. Further results are published when available at a later date.
