Opodiphthera (Syntherata) malukuensis sp. nov., a new wild silkmoth from the Aru Archipelago, Indonesia (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae)

Summary: A new species of the subgenus Syntherata MAASSEN in Maassen [& Weymer], 1873 of the genus Opodiphthera WALLENGREN, 1858 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) is herewith described: Opodiphthera (Syntherata) malukuensis sp. nov. Thus far the new species is only known from the islands of Dobo, Wokam and Kobror, Aru Archipelago, District Southeast Moluccas, Moluccas Province, Indonesia. The morphology of malukuensis sp. nov. is distinct from related populations from other islands in the Moluccas and the island of New Guinea. O. (S.) malukuensis sp. nov. is closely related to O. (S.) janetta (WHITE, 1843) sensu lato from Australia and New Guinea, and from O. (S.) godeffroyi (BUTLER, 1882) from New Guinea. The new taxon is described in species rank due to the present geographic isolation of the Aru Archipelago from New Guinea, Australia, and the remaining islands in the Moluccas. The generic names Syntherata MAASSEN in Maassen [& Weymer], 1873, Pararhodia COCKERELL, 1914, Neodiphthera FLETCHER in Fletcher & Nye, 1982, and WALLENGREN, 1858 remain in subgeneric rank in the genus Opodiphthera WALLENGREN, 1858 due to almost similar structures in the male genitalia. The taxa within the genus Opodiphthera and their placements in above mentioned subgenera are needed revised.

Ngengat pra-dewasanya belum dite-mukan. Selain itu, biologi dan ekologinyapun belum dilaporkan. Holotipe, berberapa paratipe dan spesimen awetan organ genitalia disimpan di Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (Cibinong, Indonesia).
