Contribution to knowledge the morphology of Opodiphthera (N. [recte O.]) tenimberensis NIEPELT, 1934 comb. rev. (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae)

Summary: This contribution to knowledge the wild silkmoths particularly deals with the variability of the ground coloration and wing pattern of Opodiphthera (Opodiphthera) tenimberensis NIEPELT, 1934 comb. rev. (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) from the Tanimbar Archipelago, Indonesia. This contribution based on the number of about 300 mostly male specimens, which were collected at light in the lowlands of the islands of Jamdena and Larat. It was found that the males of tenimberensis are highly variable moth in wingspan and ground coloration. The forewing lengths were measured in the males from 32.5 to 51.4 mm (average 42.7 mm, n = 89) and the ground coloration varies from pale yellowish to dark brown. The extremes in the variations are figured in color. No taxonomic conclusions are drawn.
