Notes on the variability of Attacus intermedius JURRIAANSE & LINDEMANS, 1920 from the Tanimbar Archipelago, Indonesia (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). -
This contribution to knowledge the wild silkmoths of Indonesia deals with the variability of the male adults of Attacus intermedius JURRIAANSE & LINDEMANS, 1920 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) from the Tanimbar Archipelago, Indonesia. A. intermedius is a rare taxon in collections, and nothing was known on the range of its variability thus far. In May 2002 a first expedition to the island of Larat was arranged by the authors, which resulted in three male specimens only. The adults surprisingly demonstrating a considerable higher range of variability, than recorded in the generic revision of Attacus by Peigler (1989), who do not mention that accessory fenestrae might be present beside the genotypical wing ocelli in intermedius. The following variability in the male accessory fenestrae was observed. A male adult from Larat shows no accessory fenestrae at all, while either the 2nd accessory fenestrae in the hindwings only, or the 1st and the 2nd accessory fenestrae in the hindwings and the 1st accessory fenestrae in the forewings are present in the remaining two adults (for the termination cf. Peigler 1989). A. intermedius therefore is considered not being distinct in the fenestrae morphology from most of the other taxa within this genus. Although our studies on the morphology of A. intermedius are preliminary, the observations are considered being important. Further observations are published at a later date when more specimens become available.
