Summary: Description of the hithero unknown female of Antheraea (Antheraeopsis) youngi Watson, 1915 from the island of Java (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). -
Antheraea (Antheraeopsis) youngi Watson, 1915 is a very rare taxon on the island of Java. In the year 2000 we successfully reared this taxon. Some eggs were received from a female which came to light. Both, the female collected in the wild and the small series of females, which were obtained from this rearing are much distinct in size and coloration. Since no further observations on the range of variability in taxa of the subgenus Antheraeopsis Wood-Mason, 1886 are present, the taxonomic status of the populations from the island of Java was considered being not determinable and therefore no taxonomic changes were proposed; cf. L. H. Paukstadt & U. Paukstadt (2001). The only known single female collected in the wild in western Java is not distinct from those from the islands of Sumatra and Borneo (only scattered records are present) and not distinct from those from Peninsular Malaysia, but the reared female adults are considerable different.
Description of the female adult:
Length of forewing 89 mm (n = 1). Wing upperside: Forewing ocelli slightly elongated without hyaline center. Outer black border of forewing ocelli 7.8/8.5 mm in diameter. Coloration of forewing ocelli brownish orange (brighter than ground coloration of forewing) with only a few black and white scales at the anterior border. Ocelli faced in a thin ring of black scales. Forewing ground coloration reddish brown with a strongly contrasting whitish costa, whitish marginal area and whitish double submarginal lines connected with the marginal area. Antemedian line weak, close to the costa with some white scales, otherwise dark reddish brown. Hindwings generally as forewings but antemedian line more conspicuous and double submarginal line broader with a well separating reddish brown line between. Hindwing ocelli reddish brown, shape elongated round with diameter of the outer black boarder of 9.0/10.7 mm. Small hyaline center present. Anterior end with conspicuous black scales; ocelli black bordered. Antenna 13 mm long, longest rami 2.2 mm. Underside: As in other taxa of the subgenus Antheraeopsis. Shape of forewing ocelli more elypsoid and hindwing ocelli smaller in diameter. Black pattern in hindwing ocelli reduced. Ground coloration reddish brown but wings with plenty of white scales in lines which gives a purple appearance. Median line conspicuous brownish, submarginal line with black scales. Abdomen and thorax colored as ground coloration of wings.
