Paukstadt, U. & Paukstadt, L. H. (2001): Beitrag zur Kenntnis der Verbreitung des Genus Coscinocera Butler, 1879 in Indonesien (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). - Galathea - Berichte des Kreises Nürnberger Entomologen eV (Nürnberg), Suppl. 10: pp. 66-68.

Summary: On the distribution of the genus Coscinocera Butler, 1879 in Indonesia (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). - The genus Coscinocera Butler, 1879 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) is distributed in the southeastern Indo-Australian region and very closely related to the genus Attacus Linnaeus, 1767. Records are from northeastern Australia, the island of New Guinea with adjecent smaller islands, and the island of Halmahera, North Moluccas Province, Indonesia. This paper deals with new reports of specimens of the genus Coscinocera from the islands of Batanta off the northwestern coast of Cendrawasih, Irian Jaya, Indonesia and from the Aru Archipelago, South Moluccas Province, Indonesia. Both populations clearly belong to the same widespread taxon of the genus Coscinocera. A revision of the genus Coscinocera is needed. Therefore a final determination of this taxon is not possible. Most likely the specimens from Batanta and Aru belong to Coscinocera eurystheus W. Rothschild, 1898, which show relatively small male genitalia as well as small wing ocelli. The specimens are preserved in coll. Laela H. Paukstadt (Wilhelmshaven, Germany). The females of the populations from Batanta and Aru, as well as the preimaginal instars remain unknown. Thus far only the preimaginal instars of C. hercules (Miskin, 1876) were described and figured, cf. U. Paukstadt & Probst (1990), and U. Paukstadt & L. H. Paukstadt (1995).
