Paukstadt, U. & Paukstadt, L. H. (2001): Beitrag zur Kenntnis der Variabilität von Actias groenendaeli Roepke, 1954 von den Kleinen Sundainseln, Indonesien. - Galathea - Berichte des Kreises Nürnberger Entomologen eV (Nürnberg), 17 (3): pp. 143-150; 5 figs.

Summary: Actias groenendaeli Roepke, 1954 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) is distributed on the Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia and thus far only known from the islands of Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba, and Timor. A male singleton from the island of Wetar off the northern coast of the island of Timor was reported by Brechlin (Pasewalk). A color picture of this specimen was seen. The taxonomic status of the latter needs to be determined. Likely this singleton represents a pale color variation of true A. groenendaeli. Very recently a new subspecies of A. groenendaeli was described from the island of Sumba: Actias groenendaeli acutapex Kishida, 2000. This contribution particularly deals with the variability of the male adults of A. groenendaeli from the Lesser Sunda Islands. Our studies based on about 50 males from the islands of Timor, Flores and Sumbawa, which are preserved in coll. L. H. Paukstadt (Wilhelmshaven, Germany). The male adults of A. groenendaeli are considered highly variable moths concerning the wing pattern, coloration, wing shape, genitalia structures, and the shape of forewing and hindwing ocelli. The populations of the island of Sumba are considered within the range of variability and therefore the status of A. groenendaeli acutapex is revised: A. groenendaeli acutapex syn. nov.
