Summary: The following contribution to knowledge the wild silkmoth particularly deals with a remarkable taxon of the genus Antheraea Hübner, 1819 ("1816") (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae): Antheraea (Antheraeopsis) mezops Bryk, 1944, (stat. rev.). A. mezops is considered to be the correct name for the montane populations of the subgenus Antheraeopsis Wood-Mason, 1886, which range down in higher altitudes only from northern Myanmar to northern Vietnam, via the Chinese Yunnan Plateau. A. mezops obviously prefers high elevations. Its altitudinal distribution is from between 1600 and 2500 m (Myanmar and Vietnam) and 3000 and 3800 m (P. R. China) above sea level. In lower elevations of the same localities morphologically distinct populations of this subgenus are present. A. (Ao.) mezops is a member of the castanea-group (= assamensis-group, sensu Nässig 1991). Due to significant differences in the morphology of the male genitalia, we consider that A. (Ao.) mezops neither being a subspecies of A. (Ao.) assamensis nor of any other taxon of the castanea-group. Therefore the name mezops is reinstated of which the rank is elevated to species level. The preimaginal instars of A. (Ao.) mezops remain unknown and nothing is known on its biology and ecology. The female of A. (Ao.) mezops is figured and described for the first time, based on a female from the Mt. Fan-si-pan, northern Vietnam.
