Paukstadt, U. & Paukstadt, L. H. (1993): Beitrag zur Kenntnis der Variabilität von Attacus dohertyi-Faltern von Timor, Indonesien (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). - Entomologische Zeitschrift (Essen), 103 (24): pp. 459-464; 3 figs.
Summary: This contribution particularly deals with the variability of the adults of Attacus dohertyi W. Rothschild, 1895 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) from the island of Timor, Indonesia. We observed that the average number of accessory fenestrae in the male adults is clearly different from those of A. atlas (Linnaeus, 1758) and A. inopinatus Jurriaanse & Lindemans, 1920. In the male of A. inopinatus (Flores) only exceptionally a single accessory fenestra is present in the forewing and never was observed being present in the hindwing, whereas in the male of A. atlas (Sundaland) the 1st accessory fenestra might be either present or absent in the forewing and is usually absent in the hindwing. The 2nd accessory fenestra is occasionally present in the forewing of A. atlas. The male of A. dohertyi mostly shows the 1st accessory fenestra in the forewing and the 2nd accessory fenestra in the hindwing. The female adult always shows the 1st accessory fenestra in the forewing and the 2nd accessory fenestra in the hindwing. Often all four accessories are present in fore- and hindwings of the female adults. If all accessories are present in the forewing the 1st was observed being mostly better developed than the 2nd, while in the hindwing the 2nd was observed being mostly better developed than the 1st accessory fenestra. Accessories are more common in the females than in the males of A. dohertyi.
