Paukstadt, U. & Paukstadt, L. H. (1992): Beschreibung der Präimaginalstadien von Attacus atlas (Linnaeus, 1758) aus balinesischen Populationen (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). - Entomologische Zeitschrift (Essen), 102 (6): pp. 100-107; 10 figs.

Summary: For the first time the pre-imaginal instars of the giant atlas-moth Attacus atlas (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) from the island of Bali are thoroughly described and figured and compared with those of western Java. No significant differences were found. The coloration of the caterpillars from Bali and Java differs from those from Sumatra, Kalimantan (Borneo), Taiwan and the Asian mainland. The patch on the anal proleg is a simple unicolorous dark reddish brown or purple on the mature caterpillars from Bali and Java, whereas those from the other populations mentioned have a rounded triangular orange ring enclosing a pale bluish green or azure area on the outside of each anal proleg. In the 1st, 2nd and 3rd instar the coloration of the head capsule is black on caterpillars from Bali. No taxonomic changes are proposed.
