Paukstadt, U. & Paukstadt, L. H. (1991): Erstnachweis von Samia insularis tetrica Rebel 1923 für Thailand (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). - Entomologische Zeitschrift (Essen), 101 (5): pp. 89-92; 7 figs.

Summary: A pair of Samia insularis tetrica (Rebel, 1923) [recte Samia kohlli Naumann & Peigler, 2001] (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) was collected by Sabine Steinke in Hang Dong and Maetaeng, both locations in Chiang Mai Distr., northern Thailand (in coll. Paukstadt & Paukstadt) [remarks: now in coll. L. H. Paukstadt (Wilhelmshaven, Germany)]. S. i. tetrica is recorded for the first time from Thailand. The total number of Saturniidae reported from Thailand presently increased to 29 species with additionally one subspecies. S. i. tetrica is sympatric with the much more common Samia canningii (Hutton, 1860). There are some specimens of the domesticated Samia "ricini" Iones, 1791 in the authors collection, which were collected (in the wild?) by A. M. Cotton in Chiang Mai, too. Male and female imagines and the male genitalia of Samia i. tetrica are figured and compared to those of S. canningii and S. "ricini", both from Thailand. The authors also received one male specimen, collected in Chiang Rai which is near S. i. tetrica but differs in ground color and genitalia structure [remarks: this taxon later was described as a new species: Samia wangi Naumann & Peigler, 2001]. No taxonomic changes are made in this report. A revision of the genus Samia is necessary.
