Paukstadt, U. & Ragus, R. (1990): Ein Beitrag zur Kenntnis von Brahmaea (Brahmaea) tancrei Austaut 1896 aus südkoreanischen Populationen (Lepidoptera: Brahmaeidae). - Entomologische Zeitschrift (Essen), 100 (1/2): pp. 11-30.

Summary: For the first time the pre-imaginal instars of Brahmaea (Brahmaea) tancrei Austaut, 1896 (Lepidoptera: Brahmaeidae) from southern Korea are described, figured and compared with those of Brahmaea (Brahmaea) certhia Fabricius, 1793. It was observed that imagines of Br. tancrei kept indoors actively imbibed sugar solution or water using their approx. 7 to 10 mm long proboscis. The specimens used for experimentation and for reproduction lived much longer when kept in properly moist conditions and when were able to suck sugar solution or only pure water. Reliable observations in the field are still lacking. By rearing a great number of specimens by the junior author it was found that Br. tancrei is a very variable moth. This paper shows extremes in the variation and connecting intergrades. The geographical distribution of Br. tancrei and Br. certhia in the eastern palaearctic region is shown on a map. The data were collected from literature and pin-labels from specimens in certain private collections. Br. tancrei and Br. certhia are treated as distinct species in this contribution. Both species are sympatric, at least in southern Korea. The distribution may also overlap in other areas.
