Paukstadt, U. & Paukstadt, L. H. (1989): Zuchtbeobachtungen zur Ökologie und Biologie von Attacus- und Archaeoattacus-Raupen (Lep.: Saturniidae). - Entomologische Zeitschrift (Essen), 99 (15): pp. 209-215; 10 figs.

Summary: In this contribution to knowledge the ecology and biology of Attacus and Archaeoattacus larvae the authors are reporting on rearing observations made at larvae of Attacus taprobanis Moore, 1882 from Sri Lanka, A. atlas (Linnaeus, 1758) from Taiwan, India, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and Bali, A. caesar Maassen, 1873 from Mindanao, A. lorquinii C. & R. Felder, 1861 from Luzon, and Archaeoattacus edwardsii (White, 1859) from northeastern India, which were all maintained in Germany under laboratory conditions. It was observed, that the variability in spinning of cocoons and in preparing "camouflage leaves" is carried out by the mature caterpillar probably primary due to different morphological structures of the foodplants. Only secondary the "camouflage leaves" probably provide some defense against predation on the actual cocoon within them.
