Paukstadt, U. & Paukstadt, L. H. (1986): Beschreibung der Präimaginalstadien von Attacus taprobanis Moore 1882 aus singhalesischen Populationen sowie Angaben zur Ökologie und Biologie (Lep.: Saturniidae). - Nachrichten des Entomologischen Vereins Apollo (Frankfurt am Main), N.F., 7 (2/3): pp. 71-90; 2 col.-pls. with 13 figs., 6 b/w figs.

Summary: The preimaginal instars of Attacus taprobanis Moore, 1882 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) from Sri Lanka are described and for the first time figured in color. Some particulars on the biology and ecology are presented. The larvae are compared with material from Taiwan and Thailand of the related species A. atlas (Linnaeus, 1758) and with A. taprobanis from southern India. The larvae of A. taprobanis is more colorful than that of A. atlas from Taiwan. No differences between the coloration of the larvae from Sri Lanka and those from southern India were observed. The mature larva of the Cingalese A. taprobanis prepares several "camouflage leaves", in nearly the same way as that of Archaeoattacus edwardsii (White, 1859) before spining its cocoon. The "camouflage leaves" probably provide some defense against predation on the actual cocoon within them.
