Paukstadt, U. & Paukstadt, L. H. (1985): Beschreibung und Abbildung der Präimaginalstadien von Attacus atlas Linnaeus 1758 aus malaiischen Populationen (Lep.: Saturniidae). - Entomologische Zeitschrift (Essen), 95 (9): pp. 113-121; 6 figs.

Summary: For the first time the preimaginal instars of Attacus atlas (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) from Peninsular Malaysia are described and figured, and compared with those from Taiwan, Thailand, Sumatra, Java and Bali. The larvae are variable within the Malaysia populations. No considerable differences between the colouration of the larvae from Peninsular Malaysia and those from Sumatra, Java and Bali were observed [remarks: further studies revealed in the observation of considerable differences in the coloration of the patches on the outside of each anal proleg, which clearly differ in the populations from Java and Bali from those of the remaining range of A. atlas]. Solely the colouration of the lowermost series of scoli (tubercles) is variable at larvae from different parts of the range and also within single populations. A ring of rich orange on the outside of each hindmost proleg, always enclosing a pale orange area or simple unicoloured orange. Larvae from northwestern Thailand and Taiwan bear a rondo triangular orange ring enclosing a pale blue or azure area. No taxonomic conclusions are drawn. Some rearing observations and observations on the ecology and biology are recorded.
